Skincare 101
Great skin really just a few simple steps. Read on for how to keep your face looking fabulous. The habits you form now will stick with you for the rest of your life, and it’s never too early to start perfecting your routine.
Determine Your Skin Type First, knowing your skin type helps you use the right products and ingredients:
Once you’ve got this figured out, great skin really just four simple steps: cleansing, protecting, treating and moisturizing. So say farewell to bad skin care habits this instant and read on for how to keep your face looking fabulous.
Cleansing Your Skin An artist always starts with an empty canvas, and so should you! A daily cleansing with a gentle cleanser or scrub (like with our SCRUB IT OFF or RISE AND SHINE) detoxifies your skin and removes all the grime (dirt, oil, make-up) that has built up over the course of the day.
Always use luke-warm water. Cold water closes up your pores, which makes the cleanser less effective, and hot water can dry your skin out too much. When you’re patting your skin dry, be gentle!
If you’ve been using plain ol’ soap, stop! Plain soap isn’t made for many skin types and can be far too harsh for your delicate face.
After cleansing, give your face a quick sweep with a little toner (we suggest our OOH-REFRESHING or THIS IS YOUR WAKE-UP CALL). It helps nourish and balance out your skin, while also picking up any gunk (dirt, oil, make-up) your cleanser may have left behind.
Protecting Your Skin What’s the best way to protect your skin from wrinkles, sunburns…or worse?
Use sunscreen every day! That’s right, every day – not just when you’re at the beach or playing an outdoor sport. After all, no one wants to look like a wrinkly prune by the time they’re 20!
Protect yourself against harmful UV rays by using at least SPF 15 daily.
Our OUT AND ABOUT lavender oil-free lotion includes SPF 15 already, so no more excuses, right? Right.
Treating Your Skin Every girl gets a blemish at some point or another and it’s never fun. However, if you learn how to treat blemishes properly, you can easily regain control of your renegade skin.
For most skin types, a treatment with a little salicylic acid (like our ZIP IT or TAKE NO PRISONERS blemish sticks) or benzyl peroxide will do the job.
Whatever you do, don’t pick at the blemish – this could spread the bacteria, or worse, leave a scar!
If your skin doesn’t respond to the topical treatment, or seems especially wacky, ask your mom to see a dermatologist.
Moisturizing Your Skin Any number of things like stress, weather or pollution can wreak havoc on your skin and cause it to dry out.
You might have heard that drinking eight glasses of water per day will keep your skin moisturized, but there’s a lot more to having well-hydrated skin than that.
Moisturizers help repair the damage by replenishing lost moisture and add a protective barrier to your skin, preventing dryness.
For daytime, scout out a moisturizer that boasts a little sunscreen (like our OUT AND ABOUT SPF 15)
Your skin repairs itself most when you are sleeping so look for a super-hydrating cream for night-time (we suggest TIME FOR SOME ZZZS or PUT ON YOUR PJS AND…).
